Getting to know Gaby Silva Bavio

Who is, or has been, the biggest influence on your art?

I really admire Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly. I love them.

Which of your works is your personal favorite and why?

I have two favorite works, one I love is called Epsilon which is of my miniature Schnauzer, he is 16 years old and the other one is called Whisper 2 because of the colors, it feels romantic and nostalgic.

Of all your travels, which city or place inspires you the most? Why?

I visit Rome almost every year. I don’t know why but I always find myself having to paint or draw when visiting, it’s magical there. Something similar happens to me in Germany.

What is your creative process like?

I paint every day. If for some reason I cannot, I tend to get in a bad mood. I need my music around me, and my dogs or something on Argentina TV and I can spend hours with my oils. I begin with a background of a color that I choose…. because it occurs to me. I experiment with the background, generally in shades of blue. Then when that dries I add drops and drippings of paint, and streams of oil. I wait for that to dry and turn the canvas around and begin to add more drippings of paint. After that I add brush strokes and forms. Lately I am really interested in the material, brush strokes and dots with lots of oil.

What is something quirky or unexpected about you that most people don’t know?

I have a great love for animals. I cannot live without them. At the moment, I only have 4 animals, two dogs and two cats

What inspires you?

My inspiration is life and perpetuity on earth, that’s why I paint nature, colors, light and shadows

How has your practiced changed over time?

I am naturally realistic but struggle to be abstract, it is much more fun.
