R. J. Kern: Divine Animals

We are pleased to announce Veronique Wantz Gallery’s first ever photography exhibition, featuring a solo show of local artist R. J. Kern’s stunning photographs. The show presents highlights in a mini-retrospective format with projects by Kern including: Divine Animals: The Bovidae; The Unchosen Ones; The Best of the Best; and Kern’s newest series, The Last Fair. Monographs featuring this work will also be available and include The Sheep and the Goats (Kehrer Verlag, 2018) and The Unchosen Ones: Portraits of an American Pastoral (MW Editions, 2021).

Kern’s portraits focus on intimate, interdependent relationships of people, animals, and landscape as a means of exploring how ancestry shapes identity and how myth intertwines with personal history. Tintypes, salt prints and archival pigment prints draw sharper connections between traditional and modern farming routines, as Kern adopts both historical and current photographic processes.

5-8pm

Exhibition

Oct. 8 – Nov. 12, 2022

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Veronique Wantz Gallery presents a special exhibition featuring work by ten artists who have longstanding ties to the gallery and who represent a cross-section of various abstract styles and media, including oil and acrylic painting, watercolor, woodfired stoneware, collage, and sculpture.  The ten artists to be featured are Laurie Borggreve; Kei Gratton; Valerie Grondin; Jim Hillegass (gallery owner); C. Anthony Huber; Samuel Johnson; Eleanor McGough; Andrew Nordin; Wendy Westlake; and Kathy Wismar.

The anniversary show also celebrates the legacy of founder and gallery namesake, Veronique Wantz. In 2012, French-born Veronique Wantz opened a public art gallery in the historic Foundry Building in the burgeoning Minneapolis North Loop neighborhood. From the outset, Veronique Wantz Gallery featured the work of local, national, and international emerging and established artists working in painting, works on paper, canvas, wood-fired ceramic, sculpture, textile, and glass. The gallery quickly established itself as a leading influence in the Twin Cities art world and beyond.

Sadly, in 2018, at age 56, Veronique passed away from a battle with cancer. Her wisdom, warmth, down-to-earth personality, passion for all-things beautiful, chic French style, and silly, dry sense of humor are still missed by many. She created not only a welcoming and important gallery, but also a special community of adoring friends, beloved artists, and loyal clients. Her scope of influence on the local art world was immeasurable.

Veronique’s longtime partner and confidante, Jim Hillegass, honored and built on the foundation of her invaluable vision and appreciation and love of art by helping to carry on her work. Veronique’s mission of offering the public a special and welcoming space to experience the creativity of talented emerging and established artists continues today.

In 2017, the gallery remained in the North Loop of Minneapolis and moved a few blocks west to its current location, 901 N. 5th Street. The historic light-filled space, a former 1926 produce building, with a speakeasy that once occupied the basement, was renovated with original architectural elements left intact to provide a juxtaposition of old and new, and to accommodate and showcase the installation of larger works of art. The gallery hosts solo, joint and group exhibitions, free openings, and artist talks.

The 10 for 10: Ten Artists for Ten Years of Veronique Wantz Gallery anniversary show commemorates Veronique Wantz’s original mission of discovering, exhibiting, and contributing to the connoisseurship of art to bring cultural awareness to the community. The anniversary exhibition, comprised of ten artists and their stellar abstract creations, highlights the gallery’s decade-long history and involvement in championing the local Minneapolis art scene. Looking back—but also to its future—Veronique Wantz Gallery continues to enrich the community with art for all, now and beyond.

A Balance Remains

In these extraordinary times, we hope you are able to find some space for art in your lives. More than ever, we need an abundance of color and visual poetry to quiet our minds and focus our attention.

At the gallery, our plan this weekend was to celebrate the opening of Wendy Westlake's first solo show!

For any artist, a solo show is a huge accomplishment, and this was to be Wendy's first with Veronique Wantz Gallery. So, it is with sadness that this live show is currently postponed. However, until we can eventually exhibit as planned, we are delighted to be able to share these stunning new works in an online viewing room on our website!

While this can be viewed on your phones, for the best visual experience we recommend viewing it on a web browser on your laptop or computer.

For those of you who have followed this Rochester artist's rise over that past few years, you will know that Wendy's works are now available in galleries across the country and have also found homes with collectors from the midwest and beyond. Westlake attracts attention for her modern mid-century style paintings as much as their accomplished palettes, intuitive forms and mark making throughout her balanced compositions.

GOLDFINCH is a collection of woven and knit pieces for the home and to wear, ranging from the luxurious to the homespun and born of a deep appreciation for ancient textile techniques, the hand-made process and modern technology. They work only with natural fibers—wool, yak, linen, cotton and cashmere—and are conscientious about the environmental impact of their products. They design the collection in their Minneapolis studio while their artisan partners work in the inspiring valleys of Kathmandu, Nepal and Oaxaca, Mexico to produce each piece with their expert skils and evidence of their deft hands. Whether you treat yourself, your home or a friend to a new piece from Goldfinch, they believe its lasting beauty will be enjoyed for years to come.

Comprised of high-quality materials like 14k gold-fill, sterling silver, quartz, onyx, and other high-vibrational stones, these contemporary works of art are distinct in design and embody the spiritual essence of beauty and harmony. All the jewelry is created in small batches by Yen in her jewelry studio in Golden Valley, MN, and infused with love and the most positive intentions.

Anna Chambers-Goldberg started ACG in 2013. This clothing line is an extension of her lifelong passion for sewing, with her fine art training contributing greatly to her process and inspiration.

All pieces in this collection are made by hand in Minneapolis, MN. Materials are chosen for their superb texture and quality, and are sometimes up-cycled or vintage. This results in high-quality, very limited editions, including one-of-a-kind pieces. They believe this adds originality and integrity to the designs.

ACG is committed to the future of ethical fashion. They keep their waste to an absolute minimum, sourcing their fabrics as carefully as possible and saving their fabric scraps to be remade into usable textiles.

WORKS BY

Jim Hillegass

From the Private Collection of Veronique Wantz

———

Please join us for the opening of this very special exhibition of works by Jim Hillegass at the Veronique Wantz Gallery.

In honor of our founder, we are proud to bring you Veronique Wantz's private collection of treasured paintings.

Displayed in her apartment on rue Vaneau in Paris's 7eme, this exhibition offers you the chance to view the pieces alongside photographs of them installed in the Haussmann era 1880s apartment.

For those who knew Veronique, also knew her style was second to none. Mixing antique with modern and ethnic with renaissance, the apartment was full of charm and character.

These abstract and color field paintings by Jim Hillegass brought a personal and contemporary feel to this home that was, above all, filled with happy memories.

We hope you can attend the show and celebrate these select works of Jim Hillegass from Paris.

You Am I - A celebration of Modern Identity!

VWG_You Am I.jpg

Step into this lively and colorful Utopia where class, race, sexuality, age, abilities, belief systems and gender dance in all their beauty and complexities to a rhythmic beat of respect, tolerance and understanding.

Intermingled, intertwined, interfacing. In an age where we seek ideological purity, ‘You Am I’ examines how each of these facets of our identity can coexist in analogous ambiguity. How are these multiplicities embraced? Is there a singular thread that weaves across the identity landscape: binding, repairing? Is there a rise of fantastical individualism? Or does identity melt into a pool of punctuated homogeny? As the dance progresses, do we forget to notice? Our diversity becomes our unity as we sway forward to the beat of this neoteric revolution.

You am I, I am you, we are one.

The Nature of Things

A collection of works that offers the space to consider the times in which we live.

Our world is in constant flux. We ride the ebb and flow, sifting through layers of complexity in search of a clarity that we can anchor onto. From inward we look out, observing that what goes up, doesn’t always come down. We seek solace in our connections, to tame the currents swirling around us, and find solid ground, for a while. It’s the nature of things.

We're thrilled to be holding our first pop-up exhibition at Stonebridge Lofts in the Mill District at THE MILL YARD!
